Tribe Didn't Want Details Of Hopi Katsinas Known

There was some issues about an article featuring Native American masks in the July/August issue of Native Peoples magazine. It seems that the Hopi people didn't want details about their Katsinas publicly known, especially to their own Hopi children.

Stephen Phillips, publisher of Native Peoples, printed a public apology to the Hopi people in the latest issue of Native Peoples.

I looked at the paragraph in this mask article about the Hopi katsinas and Hopi katsina masks. In my eyes, the information looked very similar to what is publicly documented about Navajo and Zuni katsinas and katsina masks but then again, the Hopi has a right to voice their opinions on how details of their culture are known.

Free Spirit Gallery does not deal with katsina masks but we do carry Northwest Indian masks.

For our suggested sources of dolls from the southwest region, see Katsina Dolls.
