Inuit Style Is Not Authentic Inuit Art

Somebody called yesterday and said he has a collection of Inuit type of carvings that were not made by Inuit carvers and he wants to sell them off online. He had asked me the best way to describe them. I told him that sometimes I see ads with Inuit style carvings. These are not authentic Inuit art. He agreed to use this term so at least he is being honest because sometimes we do see ads that feature pieces that the sellers try to portray as real Inuit art when in fact they are just imitations.

Inuit Art As Birthday Gift Or Wedding Gift

I've given Inuit art as wedding gifts much to the delight of new married couples. Quite often, this would have been their first exposure to Inuit art in person. I have a friend who invited me to his 40th birthday party and I'm thinking of giving him a nice piece of Inuit art as well knowing that he doesn't have much exposure to this type of artwork.

So if you have a wedding or birthday event coming up, you just might want to give something really special like Inuit art. Inuit art makes a very unique and appreciated birthday gift or wedding gift.

College Diversity Education Needed

In order to help students function well in a diverse working world, college diversity education should be made available to them during those years. This can also include some exposure to Inuit and Native art to help students learn more about the aboriginal cultures of North America. It is possible that many students will work with Inuit or Native people at some point in their careers and being exposed to college diversity skills would help them.

Diversity Author To Speak At APCA National Conference

Karate world champion and diversity author Clint Cora has been confirmed to speak at the upcoming APCA National conference in Atlanta in March. The APCA (Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities) conference brings together US college staff and students in charge of campus activity programs with speakers, musicians, comedians and other acts.

Clint will be presenting two educational sessions at this national conference. One will be on Diversity skills while the other will be his signature Motivation and Achieving Success talk. He will also have a presense at a booth during the entire conference so that campus staff could meet him and secure bookings to have him come to their campuses to speak. This will be the first time that an APCA conference will have a karate world champion in attendance as a presenter.

Clint's diversity and motivation talks hopefully will also be presented to target areas in the Inuit and First Nations communities.

Four Northern Canadians Awarded Order of Canada

The Order of Canada is the country's highest honour. It recognizes Canadians for outstanding achievements or exceptional contributions to Canada's cultures. This year, four individuals with origins from northern Canada will receive this honour. They are;

NELLIE COURNOYEA who helped craft the landmark 1984 land-claim agreement between the Arctic's Inuvialuit people and the federal government. She still represents the Inuvialuit and now chairs  the Inuvialuit Regional Corp. in Inuvik, N.W.T.

DAVE JOE who is from the Champagne-Aishihik First Nation in the Yukon. He currently lives in Vancouver where he runs a law firm. Joe also negotiated  final land claim agreements for several Yukon First Nations.

FRED CARMICHAEL, like Cournoyea, also lives in Inuvik, N.W.T. He was recognized for his career as a Gwich'in leader, businessman and volunteer. Carmichael served as  Gwich'in Tribal Council president from 2000 until 2008 when he retired.  Since signing the Gwich'in land claim more than 15 years ago, the tribal council is implementing the agreement to ensure the Gwich'in are included in economic plans for the Mackenzie Delta region.

ARLENE HACHÉ of Yellowknife who is a social advocate through Centre for Northern Families and other local, territorial and national associations.

Stands Apart From Other Motivational Books

Here's what Shan Dube, a social worker from Vancouver, says about Clint Cora's new motivational book The Life Champion In You;

"Clint Cora's book, The Life Champion In You, is an example of the resiliency of the human spirit. Using the tragedies of his life, he demonstrates that anyone can rise above their challenges and create a successful life. He offers practical advice to help people achieve their goals and dreams. Clint's book stands apart from other motivational books because of its personal and realistic approach. It is easy to read and written for anyone wanting to put their dreams into action. I would highly recommend this book because it is inspiring and motivating."

Clint was of course, the author of two previous ebooks on Inuit art and Northwest Native art.

Diversity Talk May Get Lots Of Interest

Every now and then, I end up speaking to HR people since they have been known to order Inuit art from my gallery as corporate business gifts. I was speaking to a member of an HR association and they have expressed interest in my diversity talk. It seems that my diversity talk may get lots of interest considering just how diverse our environment is now in North America, particularly here in the Toronto area. Companies are experiencing a lot of diversity not only among employees, but also customers and other organizations. Many of these companies want to know how to manage this diversity so that everyone functions well with people from many different backgrounds. Fortunately, I have worked my entire career in very diverse environments and have become an expert in this area. This is why I developed my diversity talk which is called "Putting Diversity Skills Into Action For Business Success. As a diversity speaker, I can help companies and organizations with diversity training.

Possible To Target Against Inuit Teen Suicides

The occurence of Inuit teen suicides is unfortunately quite high and this is definitely an issue that government agencies are trying to tackle. I'm currently in initial discussions with one such person at one of these agencies on possibly doing some talks up in the Arctic to motivate the Inuit teens to make better choices in life. The one block of course is the travel expenses. If a number of groups up north including schools, colleges and especially the local government up there, could band together to fund such a trip, I would be willing to go up north, say in Iqaluit, to do a few inspirational talks for free. This issue is important enough to do such a project.
